Muséhagen's History
Muséhagen is a protected, old botanical garden that houses a collection of about 3,000 different species! I dare you to try and count them all!
In 1987, looong before you were born, Muséhagen worked as the University of Bergen’s botanical garden. However, in 1996 it was moved to Milde and made even bigger. Today, Muséhagen works as a ‘green lung’ for Bergens inhabitants and visitors.
Muséhagen was built between 1897-1899 to the specifications of Dr.Jørgen Brunchorst, who later became the director of the University Museum of Bergen. He was very creative, and wanted all the flowerbeds and lawns to be shaped like the organs that all you humans have inside of you! Yes! He wanted them shaped as kidneys and hearts! Today, only the northernmost part of the old garden remains of Dr. Brunchorsts design. Can you find it? In 1901 the plant house was build. I am sad to tell you that this is closed today, due to maintenance work, but I am happy to also tell you that there are plans of building an entirely new plant house very soon! Hooray!
